"Silver" this weeks class lesson and last weeks actually, it took all of two weeks for the girls to complete, we worked from a photo which I don't like to do in a class much but the subject seemed easier to draw that way, we had the actual still life set up as well.  Also, when I took the picture I took it outside where the blue of the sky reflected in the silver making for more interest.  I have to say this painting was by far the winning painting this year, every one enjoyed it and had great success.

I'm still working on this one, it is quite the bear, had trouble with the hot pressed paper I'm using and I don't understand why, just a bad piece I guess, anyway, the photo was taken while antiquing at the Brimfield fair which was lots of fun poking around,  I will post again when I'm finished.

Watercolor Iris study

Tuesday, June 2, 2015

The beautiful golden Iris in my garden are in full bloom, unfortunately the heavy rains of yesterday flattened most of them in my garden.  The blooms are so enormous its not a surprise.  All the more reason to paint them since they had to be cut.  Here is one in all its glory, it is also the subject for the makeup painting class this morning.

I couldn't let those lilacs go a spring without being painted!
They are exceptionally beautiful this year.  We will be painting them in class tomorrow:-)

"Garden Pots"  this weeks watercolor class lesson,  we painted the background, dried it, then taped it off with masking tape so that we could drop heavy color into the pot area and let the colors mingle.  We then dropped a little salt in for texture of moss and garden debris to make them look old and worn.

"Rock On"  demo painting for this weeks class which I will be submitting to an upcoming juried show, it was amazing to see the different interpretations, everyone's piece was as individual as they are.

Week 1 of this springs painting class, "Veggie Soup"
Watercolor on Arches 140, I'm thinking about a dark background, there is just not enough punch for me. Girls did well, its more complicated than I like to start the season out with because I have many who don't paint until they get back to class after a long winter but the cabbages in the grocery were just so beautiful I thought they needed to be in a still life.

"Backyard Chicks"  watercolor on Arches 140 lb.
A painting of my son and daughter in law's chickens which I raised as baby chicks for them.  Sadly the two gold ones are gone now but Zulo the black chicken is still queen of the roost.  She now has 2 new chick sisters.  I painted this while on duty at The Gallery at Patriot Place last month.

"Country Cabbage"
I recently purchased this long narrow watercolor pad approximately 6x12 its fun because it forces a different perspective,  it made this cabbage more dramatic for sure.

"Beach Rocks"  something I think I'm going to try with my upcoming spring class.  I first painted shapes and shadows with a few washes of blended Burnt Sienna and Cobolt Blue then added the local color.  I had a photo but was liberal about following it and totally made up the colors for drama and design.

Did you see that sunrise today!!!!!

"Shadow Dancing"  these are pretty little vases I borrowed from a friend seeing them with their long winter shadows.  The glass features tiny little crackles that I was afraid to paint to many of because I thought it might just be to picky.  Love painting shadows and so happy to be painting again after a long dry spell :-)
